In difficulty at Manchester United, Raphaël Varane could bounce back this winter at Real Madrid, where a defender is wanted after the serious injury to David Alaba.

Raphaël Varane could be one of the main players in the winter transfer window. The French defender is going through a difficult period with Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag has often left him on the bench since the start of the season. And the 2018 world champion was one of the players the Red Devils could part with this winter, along with Casemiro, to downsize a squad that was a little too large.

With his experience and his contractual situation (he will be free next summer), Varane has a profile that is likely to interest many clubs. Bayern Munich had been cited as a possible suitor. But now Real Madrid is added to the list.

Real has just lost Alaba

The Merengues have just lost David Alaba, seriously injured in the knee, as was Eder Militao at the start of the season. That leaves only Nacho Rodriguez and Antonio Rudiger as options for Carlo Ancelotti, as far as professional central defenders are concerned.

According to Bild, Real would be interested in Varane, for what would be a surprising return to basics for the French defender. The former Lensois played for 10 years at Santiago-Bernabeu, between 2011 and 2021. He won everything with the Merengues, notably winning three Spanish championship titles and four successes in the Champions League. He would be a valuable reinforcement for Real, and would probably not need a huge amount of time to adapt to find his feet within the White House…
