Kylian Mbappé scored his 33rd goal in Ligue 1 in 2023. No French player has scored so much since a certain Just Fontaine…

Kylian Mbappé ended the year in style. The Paris Saint-Germain striker scored two new goals this Wednesday evening at the Parc des Princes, against Metz. Well offset by Vitinha, the Bondynois fired a curling shot which lodged under the crossbar of the Lorraine goalkeeper, before scoring on a counter at the end of the match.

These are Mbappé’s 33rd and 34th goals in Ligue 1 in 2023. Over a calendar year, this is the best total for a French striker in the French championship since 1958, and Just Fontaine.

This now makes 18 goals for Mbappé, who is at the top of the scorers’ rankings ten points ahead of Wissam Ben Yedder (8 goals). The PSG striker finished top scorer in Ligue 1 for the fifth time in a row this season, and can become the first player to achieve this performance six times.
