Real Madrid could be forced to make an emergency operation in the January transfer window following David Alaba’s injury.

David Alaba was forced off in the first half of Real Madrid’s 4-1 win over Villarreal in La Liga, with immediate concern over a knee problem. Real Madrid quickly confirmed that Alaba suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament at half-time and that the Austria international was due for surgery in the coming days.

Carlo Ancelotti confirmed Alaba’s season was over, in his post-match press conference, and the Italian outlined his initial plans to replace him. Aurélien Tchouameni should start in defense in Real Madrid’s last match of 2023, at Alaves, on December 21, with Ancelotti taking advantage of the winter break to take stock.

Ancelotti confirmed the club would see if “something can be done”, regarding the purchase of a centre-back in January, with Eder Militao also unlikely to play this season. Nacho Fernandez remains an experienced option for Ancelotti and Rafa Marin could be recalled on loan to Alaves. In the meantime, Tchouaméni helps out and does not play in his favorite position…
