FC Barcelona failed to get out of a bad situation on Saturday, being held to a draw by Valencia at Mestalla (1-1).
This means Girona could move nine points clear of their Catalan rivals if they beat Alavès on Monday evening. Following this recent run of poor results, Xavi Hernandez’s position as head coach is increasingly under threat. Internal disagreements have been reported and club executives are growing increasingly frustrated with the manager.
However, as of now, Xavi’s job is not under threat. According to Sport, the Barcelona coach and his players left Mestalla with more credit in the bank after a good performance, although it was marred by poor finishing.
This means there will be no margin for error on Wednesday, when Barcelona face Almeria in their final match of 2023. A good result and performance will be needed against the La Liga bottom side, this which would leave good feelings before the winter break, after which the Blaugrana will be able to start again on new bases.
