Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi tried to convince Neymar Jr to reject a move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.
Neymar created a storm in European football when he chose to leave Catalonia for Paris in a record transfer in 2017.
Despite playing a crucial role at Barcelona, as part of a formidable attacking trio, Neymar accepted the opportunity to move on.
The Brazilian was criticized for his decision, with rumors pointing to frustration at being in Messi’s shadow at the Camp Nou, and the move did not result in another Champions League title for him.
Neymar’s departure for Saudi Arabia in 2023 only increased the feeling that Neymar’s career was wasted.
“ We were very good friends and we knew that if we fulfilled our roles on the pitch, we would make Barcelona a great club“, Suarez said in an interview with Clank.
“ If one of us didn’t play well, the other two made the difference. It was a spectacular relationship.
“We told him it was a mistake to go to PSG. If Ney wanted to be the best, he had to stay at Leo’s side. But he made his decision and it left a void in the team.”.
Suarez also gave an update on his own future in 2024, as he prepares to leave Gremio to possibly join Messi at Inter Miami.
