An award created alongside the Ballon d’Or by FIFA in 2016, the FIFA – The Best ceremony has grown in importance over the years. For the moment, three players have won the award twice, namely Cristiano Ronaldo (2016 and 2017), Lionel Messi (2019 and 2022) and Robert Lewandowski (2020 and 2021). Luka Modric was also crowned in 2018 and the year 2023 should see a new player receive this trophy.
While we already knew the 10 finalists with JuliĂĄn Ălvarez (Argentina), Marcelo BrozoviÄ (Croatia), Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium), İlkay GĂŒndoÄan (Germany), Erling Haaland (Norway), Rodrigo HernĂĄndez Cascante (Spain), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Georgia), Kylian MbappĂ© (France), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Victor Osimhen (Nigeria), Declan Rice (England) and Bernardo Silva (Portugal), the trio which will decide for the title will not have a Mancunian accent.
Messi still there
Indeed, a big player in the Champions League and Premier League victories won by Manchester City, Erling Braut Haaland is of course in the race and finds himself in the final trio for the very first time. But while we could have thought that his teammate Rodrigo Hernandez would appear alongside him (scorer in the final, winner of the Nations League, the Premier League and the Nations League with Spain), FIFA has just revealed the other two finalists.
âThe three finalists for The Best FIFA Player of the Year 2023 are known. They are Erling Haaland, Kylian MbappĂ© and Lionel Messi. This prize rewards the best individual performance in men’s football over a period spanning from December 19, 2022 to August 20, 2023. The name of the overall winner will be revealed during a ceremony to be held in London on January 15, 2024.. And there is no doubt that the presence of Messi to the detriment of several Cityzens risks getting people talking.
