The nightmare for the Blues

Qualified for the Final Four of the very first Women’s Nations League, the France team fell to Germany in the semi-finals. The Blues have the painful memory of the elimination in the semi-finals of Euro 2022 against Alexandra Popp’s Frauenteam.

After an almost faultless run in its Nations League group (five wins and one draw), the French women’s team has a great chance of winning the very first title in the history of the selection! Hervé Renard’s Bleues will have a lot to do, since the draw for the Final Four gave them the reception of Germany in the semi-finals on February 23. The final will be played by the winner of Spain-Netherlands.

The French therefore avoid the Spanish world champions, but falling on Germany is clearly bad news. The memory, always present in our heads, is terrible. Wendie Renard and her teammates did not exist against the Frauenteam in the semi-finals of Euro 2022, a year and a half ago in England. The team then led by Corinne Diacre only lost 2-1, but it never really competed against a German team that was much more physically sharp.

The Blues will return to Alexandra Popp, who scored a double during this half of the Women’s Euro, and who also scored two goals during the friendly match between the two selections three months later, in Dresden (2- 1). Note that Popp has been less prolific since the start of the season, with only two goals in eight Frauen-Bundesliga matches with Wolfsburg and one goal in four women’s LDN matches.
