In difficulty in the league this season, Chelsea could still spend lavishly to strengthen themselves during the winter transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino’s phrase almost sounded like an ironic joke, but the coach of Chelsea has clearly indicated that his team needs new reinforcements after the Blues’ defeat at Everton on Sunday, four days after that against Manchester United. Despite nearly 470 million euros invested during the 2023 summer transfer window, the London club is in a very sad 12th place in the Premier League and does not seem to have really progressed in its game.

Three avenues to strengthen

According to The Standard, the former PSG coach designated three priority positions to strengthen during the winter, namely central defense, midfield and striker. To strengthen his rearguard, Pochettino is thinking of Jonathan Tah, whose big season with Leverkusen should quickly increase his price. In the middle, no name has yet stood out while last summer’s recruits disappoint: Moises Caicedo is far from his level at Brighton while Romeo Lavia has not played a single minute in the jersey Blues.

Finally, several attackers are targeted to strengthen a sector in which Nicolas Jackson is struggling to fully convince while Christopher Nkunku, who has still not played for Chelsea due to his knee operation last summer. Victor Osimhen or Ivan Toney could therefore be Chelsea’s priority targets during the winter transfer window.
