Firecracker throwing during Montpellier-Clermont, Lyon bus stoned before Marseille-Lyon, homophobic chants during Rennes-Nantes… Ligue 1 2023-2024 edition has experienced numerous incidents tarnishing its reputation on a global scale. Although he has not coached there since 2012, France team coach Didier Deschamps regrets the deterioration of the climate surrounding French football in recent years.

“The context is not the same. In Ligue 1, we deal with local or historical rivalries. There are places in France where things have clearly deteriorated. In the selection, there is a sporting rivalry because everyone wants to see their country win but the degree of insecurity is very low as far as the fans are concerned. Now, other threats remain, unfortunately. And they can sometimes be heavy…”explains the French technician in an interview with Parisian.
