Incredible but true: FC Barcelona lost the Catalan derby against Girona (2-4) on Sunday and now has seven points less than its evening opponent. Girona FC is a leader who never ceases to surprise.

This Catalan derby was extremely anticipated on Sunday between Barça, the reigning Spanish champion, and Girona FC, the surprise leader of La Liga. And the result is shattering! The Blaugrana lost in front of their Montjuic crowd (2-4) to find themselves seven lengths behind their evening opponent. The Blanquivermells are in the lead with two points more than Real Madrid at the end of this 17th day.

Xavi’s dominant formation was not skilful enough in front of the opposing goal and the Gironese missed almost no chance of scoring. The visitors from the North opened the scoring with Artem Dovbyk (12th), before an equalizer from Robert Lewandowski (19th). But Miguel Gutiérrez, a full-back trained at Real Madrid, gave his team the advantage with a long-range strike (40th).

The second half was nightmarish for FCB, who came up against the opposing goalkeeper, the excellent Paulo Gazzaniga. Valery Fernandez (after erasing Jules Koundé, 80th) and Cristhian Stuani (95th) increased the score, a goal in added time from Ilkay Gündogan having barely revived his side (91st). Girona will try to follow up against Alavés last week, when Barça will have to win in Valencia.
