Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has made it clear he plans to stick with Martin Dubravka after Nick Pope’s shoulder injury, but the chance to strengthen his ranks in January could prove tempting
Next month, Newcastle will consider a second swoop for Hugo Lloris if Eddie Howe decides he needs extra cover for Nick Pope, according to the Daily Mirror.
The England international is expected to miss up to four months of competition after dislocating his shoulder in the 1-0 win over Manchester United last weekend. With Howe having full confidence in his former number 1 Martin Dubravka, the Magpies are already discussing potential solutions they could look to explore in the transfer market to strengthen their cages.
Among them, David de Gea, free of any commitment, is open to a transfer, while Lloris, 36, who left Tottenham, is also highly regarded by the Newcastle hierarchy. The Magpies had already tried, in vain, to sign Lloris on loan in September, but the surprise offer was politely rejected by the World Cup winner.
Lloris felt it was too late to jump ship, even though it was clear he would not be part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans for the 2023/24 season. His current contract expires in the summer of 2024 and that is why Tottenham want to transfer their former captain this winter in order to save money.
