The Frenchman, who finished third in the last Ballon d’Or, was asked about his former PSG teammate Lionel Messi’s win. Messi won the award for the 8th time last October.
“The Ballon d’Or standings are what they are. Messi deserves it. When Messi wins a World Cup, Messi should win the Ballon d’Or,” explains the Parisian striker, who recently scored a hat-trick against Reims with the capital club. The Argentine’s season took on a new dimension with this World Cup victory, against the French team in the final.
For Kylian Mbappé, this world title put an end to any suspense in the race for the Ballon d’Or. “On the evening of December 18th (the day of the World Cup final) I knew he had won the World Cup and the Ballon d’Or. Everyone knew,” said the French striker, who had a fantastic match against the Argentines.
At the press conference, Kylian Mbappé claims to have had a great 2022-23 season. “But compared to a World Cup won by Messi, it doesn’t weigh much,” concludes the captain of the French team. The Parisian striker will try to have a great season with his club as well as in the national team, with the Euro in sight. During the previous gathering, Didier Deschamps’ men secured their spot for the next European Championship.
