The late championship match turned largely to OM’s advantage this Wednesday. With a great Aubameyang, the Phocaeans won 3-0.
A little over a month after their first missed meeting, OM and OL met again this Wednesday for a showdown exclusively on the field. But, ultimately, there wasn’t really any standoff. The Marseille team flew through the debates, inspired by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finally living up to his reputation.
Aubameyang hunter of Gones
Against the bottom of the championship, Gennaro Gattuso’s men were not complacent. They even folded the debates in the first half hour of the game with two goals scored. Taking advantage of the generosity within the Lyon defense, they struck twice in the space of five minutes (21e and 25e).
Author of four goals in the last two matches, Aubameyang has transformed this time into a serial passer. He first served Vitinha on a plate, before offering the Panamanian Murillo his first goal in Ligue 1. In no time, the Gabonese and his team had just annihilated the injured Lyon beast. There was still an hour to play but no one imagined this sick OL recovering from such a start.
15 – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is involved in 15 goals with Marseille in all competitions this season (10 goals, 5 assists), only Kylian Mbappé (20 – 18 goals, 2 assists) does better among Ligue 1 players. #OMOL pic.twitter.com/BHO7XCfIew

Marseille did not let their opponent breathe
Failing to bounce back, the Rhone residents were still able to stop the bleeding. Their start to the second period was interesting. Unfortunately for them, all these efforts went up in smoke at the 55e when Aubameyang came to score the third goal for the locals. Exploiting a pass from Vitinha, the former Saint-Etienne player shot Anthony Lopes from close range, definitively putting an end to what remained of the suspense in this meeting.
OM won 3-0, but the score could have been bigger. Vitinha was notably refused a double, because of a hand (67e). And before him, Jordan Veretout had missed a face to face with Lopes (36e). Les Gones can therefore consider themselves lucky not to have left the Vélodrome with even redder buttocks.
OM rebounds, OL sinks
For Sage, and despite the some progress seen, the interim period is turning into a nightmare with a record not much more rosy than that of Fabio Grosso. John Textor and all his new lieutenants will have to quickly find a solution to reverse this bad spiral because their club is heading straight towards Ligue 2. For OM, the picture is of course less critical now. With this 3e victory in a row, Gigot and his teammates confirm their recovery. The rest of their season promises to be auspicious.
