After the death of the supporter which occurred before the Nantes-Nice match, the journalist for RMC Daniel Riolo, who spoke about the incident, was particularly virulent.

A Nantes supporter was stabbed to death on the sidelines of FC Nantes’ victory against Nice (1-0), last Friday in Ligue 1. This tragedy aroused strong emotion and calls for radical measures to combat violence in French football.

The incident took place in the evening before the match. A group of Nice supporters attacked a group of Nantes supporters, injuring one of them in the abdomen. The victim, aged 38, died of his injuries in hospital.

The Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, strongly condemned this act and promised extreme measures to act against its violence. She notably mentioned the possibility of banning supporters’ travel outside.

“We have an audience of savages”

RMC radio columnist Daniel Riolo also called for radical measures. He declared: “After the incidents in Marseille (October 29 against Lyon, editor’s note), I asked if a death was needed to finally make the right decision. The dead man is there. What do we do, should we continue? In truth, we shouldn’t be talking about L1 matches this weekend. We have a dead man on our hands. We heard Vincent Labrune ? A simple press release for a dead person? We feel like we don’t care at all. That saddens me. I’ve been saying this for quite some time and I hope we will finally open our eyes once and for all. It’s sad to say it but we must stop the travel of supporters. »

The polemicist believed that France was incapable of managing violence in football. “It’s over, stop, we’ll bury the idea,” he said. We are incapable of managing that in France because we have a public of savages and a public authority which has other things to do than manage savages. »
