Newcastle United are considering signing former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea after losing Nick Pope to a long-term injury.

Nick Pope fell awkwardly during Newcastle United’s Premier League match against Manchester United on Saturday and dislocated his shoulder. While we await the result of a scan, the goalkeeper is expected to be unavailable for up to five months, according to journalist Mike McGrath.

With Pope potentially out for the remainder of the season, the Magpies are considering bringing in former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, according to the DailyMail.

The Spaniard has been without a club since leaving the Red Devils last summer when his contract expired. He was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last transfer window, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr expressing interest in him. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami has also been rumored, but no transfer has materialized.

There is a possibility that De Gea could return to the Premier League, but Steven Gerrard’s side Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League have also made him an offer.

Pope is the goalkeeper who has made the most clean sheets in the Premier League, six, one more than Andre Onana (Manchester United).

This injury is a big blow for the club and the player, as it also jeopardizes his chances of being part of the England squad for Euro 2024.

For now, Eddie Howe will use Martin Dubravka in goal as the club prepare for tough fixtures in December, including against AC Milan in the Champions League and Liverpool in the Premier League.
