In just a few months, PIerre-Emerick Aubameyang has climbed into the Top 10 of the best European scorers in OM history. Which is not necessarily a good sign.
The idea for this article came to us from a tweet from a colleague, who noticed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had (already) entered the Top 10 best scorers in the history of OM in the European Cup . A statistic which can both illustrate the very good performance of the Gabonese in C1 and C3 (2 goals in the Champions League play-offs, 5 goals in the Europa League), while he only scored one goal in the League 1. But it can also symbolize the relative weakness of Marseille’s history in European matters.
Aubameyang became the 7th top scorer in OM history in the European Cup.

Aubameyang is now the 8th top scorer in OM history, tied in particular with Valère Germain, Lucas Ocampos and Florian Thauvin. He is still quite far from the number 1 in this area, Jean-Pierre Papin (23 goals), leader ahead of Mamadou Niang (22 goals), while it only took one season for Didier Drogba to rise to the top. in third position, with a total of 11 goals far from being out of reach for Aubameyang.
Clearly, in a giant of the Old Continent like Real Madrid, AC Milan or Liverpool, it would be unthinkable for a player to join the top 10 European scorers in just a few months. But in France it is possible, and not only in Marseille.
At PSG, Monaco or Lyon, what does it look like?
At PSG, for example, the Top 10 is not much higher. The bar is set at nine goals, and that’s the total to date from Marquinhos, Lionel Messi, and Guillaume Hoarau. Unsurprisingly, the best are stars of the QSI era, Kylian Mbappé (37 goals) ahead of Edinson Cavani (30), Neymar (22) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (20), while George Weah (16) arrives next, to remind another era.
In Monaco, the top European scorer in history is Victor Ikpeba, with his 14 goals. And you also need 7 goals, like at OM, to enter the Top 10. This is the current total of Wissam Ben Yedder, who is only one length behind Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet and Dado Prso.
Finally, it is in Lyon, the big French club of the early 2000s, that it is more “difficult” to join the Top 10 European scorers. You have to find the net 11 times, as Sidney Govou, Fleury di Nallo and Nestor Combin did. No. 1 in this ranking is none other than Juninho (18 goals), who could be threatened by Alexandre Lacazette (15 goals) if OL ever returns to the European scene in the coming seasons.
