Mbappé scored a hat-trick to reach 46 goals for the national team (the third best historical total) and 300 career goals. His numbers are as impressive as his 40-meter lob for his third goal on Saturday. Could this win over the hearts of the last remaining skeptical French fans? Not really, according to a recent poll. Despite his incredible sporting performances, his personality continues to divide opinions over the years.
The results of a poll conducted by Odoxa for Winamax and RTL are clear. Kylian Mbappé’s image has deteriorated since 2019 according to the opinions of the French respondents. 67% of voters find him likable, which is a 13-point decrease over 4 years. When it comes to humility, the numbers are not much better. Only 47% of respondents consider him humble, a 19-point drop compared to 4 years ago.
These opinions are based on Mbappé’s behavior on and off the field. Football fans do not appreciate his playing style, with 73% believing he should be less individualistic. With Luis Enrique recently expressing his expectations for the PSG player, 79% of respondents believe that Mbappé should listen to his coach’s criticism in order to improve. This number rises to 85% among PSG supporters. Additionally, in a year marked by the death of young Nahel and public condemnation of Mbappé, respondents are critical of the sociopolitical stances of the Parisian player. Only 49% approve of them, although 63% still believe that Mbappé is a role model for the youth. This goes to show that his numerous goals scored are not enough to make Mbappé an undisputed personality in France.
