Less than two months after taking office, Marcelino left Olympique de Marseille after this stormy meeting with the supporters, thus forcing the Marseille club to urgently find a new coach. On September 27, OM formalized the express arrival of a free Gennaro Gattuso and freshly rejected by Olympique Lyonnais.
Like his last experiences, the Italian arrived with the label of a coach focused on the offensive and eager to have a team of warriors running everywhere. Two months later, the results are not great. Marseille is in a poor eleventh place in the Ligue 1 standings. Present on the podium for the last two years, the Olympians are already seeing the passing of three slip away as they are relegated eleven lengths behind third.
Return to Serie A for Gattuso?
After eight matches, Gattuso has a record of three wins, as many defeats and two draws. In Ligue 1, OM have not won since October 8 and a success against Le Havre, and their attack is at half mast. Under contract until next June with an additional year optional, Gattuso is still far from being a long-term player if his results do not improve. Luckily for him, that’s not his problem.
Tuttosport tells us on today’s front page that a club is already thinking of recovering the Transalpine. This is Torino. Eleventh in the Serie A standings, the Piedmont club coached by Ivan Juric knows that its Croatian coach will probably not extend his contract (June 2024). The people of Turin have therefore already advanced their pawns regarding his succession. After two years abroad, will Gattuso make his comeback in Italy?
