The Maracana stadium was the scene of violent clashes between supporters of Argentina and Brazil this Tuesday evening.
The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is one of the most intense in football. It is often marked by great passion, but also by violent incidents.
The latest episode took place on November 22, during a qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup. At the time of the national anthems, clashes broke out between supporters of the two teams. The police tried to disperse them, but their intervention was very forceful.
The Argentine players, shocked by these scenes of violence, initially decided to leave the field. “We are not going to play, we are leaving”declared Lionel Messi.
Finally, the 2022 world champions agreed to return to the pitch, but they wanted to express their solidarity with the supporters who had been victims of police violence. Emiliano Martinez, the Albiceleste goalkeeper, even tried to climb into the stands to intervene.

The match was finally able to be played normally, and Argentina won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Nicolas Otamendi.
As a reminder, on November 2, violent clashes had already taken place in Copacabana, on the sidelines of the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and Fluminense.
