Journalist Matthias Manteghetti defended the credibility of his colleague David Berger, who announced a potential sale of OM next January.

Rumors of the sale of Olympique de Marseille have gained momentum in recent days, after a statement from David Berger, journalist for Canal +. The latter affirmed that the sale of the Marseille club could be concluded as early as January 2024. This announcement provoked numerous reactions, with some expressing doubts about David Berger’s sources. His former colleague Matthias Manteghetti came to his defense, explaining that he was a cautious man who would not have spoken out if his information was not solid.

“He doesn’t need to be talked about”

Concerning David Berger’s comments, he is someone who does not have to ask for authorization since he is a very well-respected journalist in the football world.. and to Canal+ in particular, Manteghetti said. He has been a commentator on Canal+ for 30 years, so he is one of the top commentators. He made these remarks during a program that did not only talk about football, but he had this information on the sale of OM during the previous days, so he decided to give it and he does not need to ask anyone to do it.»

Matthias Manteghetti also underlined the fact that David Berger is not used to communicating information about the transfer window. “ It surprised me that it was him, because basically he’s not someone who is around the clubs for information like the transfer window, he explained. I know him very well, and if he allowed himself to say this knowing what was said around the sale, it is because he is sure of himself. If this is not confirmed, we should definitely not believe that he did this for the buzz, because he is comfortable in his position and he does not need to be talked about. He doesn’t need to put himself in danger, he just shared his information, and he may have underestimated the effects on OM supporters. He told me about it. »

If the sale of OM is confirmed, it would be a major turning point in the history of Ciel et Blanc. Frank McCourt, current owner of the club, bought the Ligue 1 player in 2016 for 45 million euros. He could realize a considerable capital gain if the sale is made at the price mentioned by David Berger, i.e. 400 million euros. It remains to be seen whether the journalist’s information will be confirmed in the coming months. If this is the case, this would be one of the most important issues in French football in 2023.
