England international Jude Bellingham won the Golden Boy last December, a choice hotly contested by former Bulgarian international striker Hristo Stoitchkov.

Hristo Stoitchkov, former Bulgarian international, is not convinced by the awarding of the 2023 Golden Boy to Jude Bellingham. The former Barça glory believes that the English midfielder, who arrived at Real Madrid this summer from Borussia Dortmund for an amount estimated at 103 million euros, does not deserve this price, because he has not won any trophies at club or with his national team this year.

“Bellingham is one of the strongest talents in the world: he has a lot of class and a lot of intelligence. For me, it’s a ‘mix’ between Laudrup, Kaká and Pogba. (…) But I would like to know what he won in 2023, between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. Nothing…, he declared to Tuttosport.

The 1994 Ballon d’Or would have preferred to see Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) or Alejandro Balde (FC Barcelona) win the trophy rewarding the best player of the season aged under 21. “As Gavi was not eligible by the regulations (the FC Barcelona midfielder was indeed named among the candidates, editor’s note), I would have rewarded Jamal Musiala or Alejandro Baldé,” judged the native of Plovdiv.
