The Football Observatory (CIES) website published this week the ranking of the most creative players in world football.

While goals and assists remain the most commonly cited figures for comparing attacking players, other statistics may be relevant to assess the impact of an attacker or attacking midfielder. Data relating to creation are particularly scrutinized by recruiters. By dribbling, but also by passing, certain footballers can be particularly destabilizing.

In the 21st century, Lionel Messi, but also Neymar, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne have been recognized as the most creative players in the world. Since the start of the current season, a rather unexpected name has been leading the way in this category.

The most creative player is…

The Football Observatory (CIES) website published this week the ranking of the most creative players in world football. And it is Ousmane Dembélé who sits at the top of this ranking. The 2018 world champion obtains an index of 2.36 and establishes himself as the best performing player on the planet in terms of chances created, i.e. passes leading to a clear opportunity.

A figure which gives some relief to Dembélé’s debut at PSG. Always silent in front of goal, the winger confirms his influence in the chances created by the capital club. Dembélé is clearly ahead of his pursuers, Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané (1.92) and Athletic Bilbao striker Nico Williams (1.89). Kylian Mbappé follows in 4th position with an index of 1.87.
