Seven years after its entry into modern football, Video Assistance to Refereeing, which we know by the abbreviation VAR, is still far from having solved all the problems linked to refereeing errors. Many contentious situations are still controversial, particularly when it comes to hands and offside positions. To calm everyone down, football lawmakers have started discussions to improve the way VAR works, as calls grow for the system to be overhauled or even scrapped.
According to The Telegraph, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has begun a series of consultations on the changes needed for a first serious review of VAR, since its introduction in football. New rules could be tested and it is increasingly likely that the introduction of a semi-automatic offside detection system will be tried in some leagues next season, notably the Premier League. A system already tested during the 2022 World Cup, but which did not really appeal to the leagues.
