During an interview, Mattéo Guendouzi revealed the reasons for his departure from OM to Lazio Rome this summer.

The departure of Mattéo Guendouzi greatly affected the supporters of theOlympic Marseille during the 2023 summer transfer window. Not always appreciated by opposing supporters, the former Arsenal player had in any case won the hearts of the Phocaeans with his character and his rage to win, which had, among other things, allowed OM to finish 2nd during the 2021-2022 season.

During an interview given to Téléfootthe French international looked back on this first season in the Olympian jersey, as well as on the second which precipitated his departure to the Lazio Rome. “Honestly, the game that suited me the most was the game with coach Sampaoli. It was really football that I really enjoyed, whether in training or in matches. I found myself there and I think the whole team did too, that’s why we had an excellent season and why we still finished second in the championship. That’s why I flourished to the fullest”explained the 24-year-old.

A more delicate second season

Despite a deep attachment to the Riviera club, Guendouzi had to leave (in the form of a loan with obligation to purchase), he also revealed the reasons for his choice and the complicated second season with Igor Tudor. “You have to know how to make career choices at important times. When I signed for OM, it was in relation to the speech of Pablo Longoria and Sampaoli because I was offered a project and I was told a lot of things which were transcribed in the first season. But subsequently, it no longer suited me enough as time went on. Unfortunately, over the last six months of the second season, things were no longer the same, there was a lot of instability. We changed coaches many times in the space of two years, (…) there was no continuity”added the Roman player before wishing great success to his former club.
