Already winner of AEK two weeks ago, OM won in Athens in a crowd (0-2) on Thursday evening, and find themselves at the top of their Europa League group, three weeks away from hosting Ajax.

In the absence of a Champions League (after its elimination in the third qualifying round against Panathinaikos), OM should extend its European campaign until next winter. The Phocaeans are in the lead of their Europa League group after their victory in Athens against AEK (0-2) on Thursday for the fourth day. They are one point ahead of Brighton three weeks before the arrival of Ajax (last in the group) in a Stade Vélodrome which promises to be hot.

After the great battle of the first leg against this “friendly” club of AEK, with a 3-1 success at home, the Marseillais had fewer opportunities but were able to keep their lead after the opening score of the header from Chancel Mbemba from a corner from Jonathan Clauss (25th). Vitinha, aligned up front in the absence of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, missed his two opportunities by hitting the opposing goalkeeper (52nd) then a post (82nd).

OM were especially hot at the start of the second half, with several opportunities for the Kitrinomavri (the Black and Yellow), including a header at the post from Levi Garcia released by Pau Lopez (51st). The Spanish goalkeeper intervened with another header attempt as added time approached (89th) and it was finally Ismaïla Sarr, on a breakaway from Jordan Veretout, who scored Marseille’s second goal (93rd). For the first away victory of the entire season!
