Kylian Mbappé has criticized AC Milan supporters for their treatment of Gianluigi Donnarumma, after a shower of boos and fake banknotes on the PSG goalkeeper.
Donnarumma’s return to the San Siro with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening ended in a 2-1 defeat after joining the French club in 2021 on a free transfer. His move to Paris was marked by controversy, with reports suggesting he would earn more than €12 million a year, which did not sit well with Milan fans who believe the goalkeeper has abandoned his boyhood club for more money.
The Milanese ultras also gave Donnarumma a hostile reception and even threw him fake banknotes bearing his image, calling him “Dollar-umma”. Mbappé did not appreciate seeing his teammate being harassed by Milan supporters and attacked them after the match.
“There was a lot of noise and Gigio received a difficult reception. I think it was a bit too much, but there you go, that’s football today.”he told TeleLombardia in a mixed zone.
“The fans do what they want, we can’t know what they feel inside. We protected Gigio as much as we could, and we feel sorry for him tonight.”
Milan took all three points in front of a delirious crowd at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium thanks to goals from Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud. Milan Skriniar opened the scoring, but Milan’s thirst for victory made the difference in the end. The victory opened the race for qualification, with all four teams, including Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United, in contention for the top two places in Group F.
