Undefeated for a little over a month between La Liga and the Copa del Rey, Valencia CF wanted to continue its good momentum with the reception of promoted Granada, in great difficulty at the start of the season with a penultimate place, for the count of the 12th day of the championship. The club suffered a first blow with the injury exit of its Moroccan international Selim Amallah, replaced before the first half hour by former Brentford Sergi Canos (24th).

Rubén Baraja’s men finally broke the deadlock through Pepelu, who deceived the opposing goalkeeper from the penalty spot in added time of the first period (45+7th). Although they suffered a few Andalusian offensives, the Merengots were never really worried and won at home by the narrowest of margins. Valencia climbs to eighth place in the ranking, 2 points from the top 5. Granada continues another poor performance and remains 6 points from the first non-relegation place.
