Lionel Messi has not remained on good terms with his former Barça teammate, Memphis Depay.
Lionel Messi and Memphis Depay played a year together at Camp Nou. And that wasn’t enough to form a friendship. There is not even any affinity between the two men and this was verified with the last interview given by the Argentine striker.
Messi no longer wants to pronounce Depay’s name
In an interview with France Football for the special Ballon d’Or issue, Messi couldn’t even pronounce the name of his former Blaugrana teammate. He is not held in high esteem, especially since what happened at the last World Cup.
Argentinians and Dutch clashed during their opposition to Qatar. La Pulga said it was because of pre-match provocations from the Oranje. And he still has that of Depay in his throat.
“The previous days, they (the Dutch) started making statements and looking for us a little, in particular the coach (Louis van Gaal) and the player who presented himself at a press conference the day before the match (Memphis Depay). And then it was a World Cup quarter-final, a big match, between Argentina and the Netherlands,” he said.
At the end of this game, Messi showed the bad side of himself, notably insulting Wout Weghorst in the tunnel leading to the locker room. Today, he seems to regret it: “It’s because of everything that happened before and during the match. They talked a lot before and some picked up on my reaction. I admit that I didn’t like seeing myself like that, the way I reacted, but these are tense moments and it can happen…”
