For several days, Anwar El Ghazi’s unease has been growing in Mainz. Suspended initially for announcing his support for the Palestinian cause in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the former LOSC was finally reinstated at the start of the week after a discussion with his management. However, this Wednesday, the 28-year-old Dutch winger published a long message on his social networks affirming that his position had not changed since the start of the conflict.
A message which visibly made the current red bottom of the Bundesliga cringe. In a press release, the overseas team announced the dismissal of El Ghazi with immediate effect: “1. FSV Mainz 05 terminates the contractual relationship with Anwar El Ghazi and dismissed the player with immediate effect on Friday. The club is taking this action in response to the player’s statements and publications on social media.»
