While uncertainty hung over his future, Yoann Gourcuff made his return to Stade Rennais official on November 2, 2015.
In the summer of 2015, Yoann Gourcuff’s career was at a standstill. Consequence of yet another injury, this time a stress fracture to a bone in the foot. While his contract with Olympique Lyonnais ended a few months earlier, the Breton midfielder wants to wait until he is healed to commit to a new club. In mid-September, he just agreed to sign a pre-contract with Stade Rennais.
But on November 2, 2015, while his return to the field was not expected for several weeks, he finally formalized his big return to his training club by signing a one-year contract. “I’m very happy, I hope to get back on the pitch very quickly, to be able to have fun. I don’t know when I’m going to play again, we’ll see, I miss the field,” he confides in an interview with West France on the eve of resuming individualized training.

Despite these long months of inactivity and the ordeal experienced at Olympique Lyonnais due to repeated injuries, he claims to have never thought of retirement. “I love football so much, it was out of the question to think about things like that. I watch all the Stade Rennais matches, I am in regular contact with the coach, the president and other people at the club,” he assures.
As expected, Yoann Gourcuff will have to wait until January 2016 to return to the field. But his return turns into a disaster since he has to leave the field, injured by one of his teammates. If he scored a double against Olympique de Marseille during a historic success won by Stade Rennais at the Vélodrome in mid-March (5-2), the French international once again struggles to meet the expectations placed on him , ending the season with a measly two goals in 12 appearances.
The native of Pleemeur will nevertheless sign a new two-year contract with Rennes at the end of the season.
