Messi won the trophy for the eighth time after leading Argentina to victory in the World Cup last year. Some, like Jérôme Rothen and Lother Matthaus, considered this triumph illogical but this is not the case for Bellingham.
The England international, winner of the Kopa Trophy, validated this recognition by declaring: “He’s an incredible player, that’s why he has eight awards. Messi is undoubtedly one of the best footballers in history. He is incredible, for all the work he has done, and not just for what he saw in the World Cup.”
Asked about the possibility of winning the Ballon d’Or himself, Bellingham said: “Honestly, I don’t know yet if I’m going to win the Ballon d’Or. I do not think about it. Today, I came to collect the prize thanks to the work of my teammates at club and in the England team.”
