One of the most unusual names in the football world is hanging up. At just 33 years old, Danny Drinkwater has announced that he is ending his football career. An announcement which does not come as a complete surprise when we look back on the recent starving years of the English midfielder. “I would just like to announce my retirement from professional football. It probably took a while, especially last year, but I think it’s time to officially announce it now. I didn’t think it would bother me, but saying it afterwards is almost like scratching my head a little.”he tells the High Performance Podcast.
Champion of England in 2016, forming a formidable double-pivot alongside N’Golo Kanté at Leicester, Danny Drinkwater will never have managed to digest his transfer to the Blues (around €35 million). At Chelsea, the midfielder gets completely lost, does not play and has a series of inconclusive loans (Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa) and finally Reading in 2021/2022. Too many failures for the one who was without a club since last summer. He will nonetheless remain a Foxes legend for his iconic Premier League victory in 2015/2016.
