Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has described the situation as “worrying” following reports that Luis Diaz’s parents were kidnapped in Colombia.
Klopp did not retain Diaz in his 20-man squad for Sunday’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, citing kidnapping as the reason.
Overnight, reports emerged from Colombia that Diaz’s parents had been kidnapped by armed men riding motorcycles in their hometown. Thanks to the rapid response of Colombian authorities, the player’s mother was released safely, but his father remains missing.
“We had to make a late change due to Luis Diaz’s private situation. It’s a worrying situation for all of us and it was a pretty difficult night. I had never experienced this before. It’s a new experience that I never needed”explained Klopp before kick-off against Forest at Anfield.
The Reds released the following statement Sunday morning before the game: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm that it is aware of an ongoing situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia. We very much hope that this matter will be resolved safely and as soon as possible. In the meantime, player welfare remains our immediate priority. »
