Former Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba spoke behind the scenes of his transfer from Olympique Marseille to Chelsea in 2004.

Arriving at Olympique de Marseille in July 2003 from EA Guingamp, Didier Drogba only needed one season to mark the hearts of Marseille supporters. During an interview with streamer Zack Nani, the former Ivorian international, author of 32 goals in 55 matches for Marseille, returned to his difficult departure from OM for Chelsea during the 2024 summer transfer window.

A Drogba addiction

“Initially, I am not aware that there is any interest from Chelsea. It was after Cameroon-Côte d’Ivoire, a qualifying match for the World Cup, that Pape Diouf called me, asked me to join him in his room and said to me: ‘The Russians there, they’re bothering me a little . They made an offer and the present Dreyfus accepted.’ I had gone to the USA, I had jetlag in my head and I asked myself 1000 questions”, thus confided the ex-captain of Elephants.

And to add:” I don’t understand. I call Anigo, I say I don’t want to leave. I call my agent and I say that I don’t want to leave, that I don’t understand. When I return, everything accelerates, there is the press conference and the president at the time, Boucher, who tells me that with the transfer money (38.5 million euros, editor’s note), they will be able to buy several players and the team will no longer be dependent on me. And he said to me: ‘Will I do the performance I did this year next year? »he concluded.
