Pep Guardiola said “people want Erling Haaland to fail”, while responding to criticism after his somewhat mixed performance against Young Boys.
The Norwegian striker was going through a drought having failed to find the net in five Champions League matches before scoring a brace in City’s 3-1 win over Young Boys on Wednesday evening in Bern . However, in the first half he missed a golden opportunity in a one-on-one and the City manager defended his striker after a decisive performance.
“ It’s important to have opportunities, people want him to fail.”Guardiola told TNT Sports after the match.
“I’m sorry, but this player will score goals all his life. Given the chances, he is an incredible threat. Players must be able to find the pass, like Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan did. But he will score until his last day of football.”
Haaland’s penalty goal was his first continental goal after 543 minutes, since his goal against Bayern Munich in the quarter-final second leg of the previous edition. He nevertheless scored 37 goals in 33 Champions League matches.
