Former FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has thrown his support behind Rafael Marquez to one day manage the senior team.
Marquez was named coach of FC Barcelona’s B team last season and led them to the play-offs, finishing in 4th place and losing the play-off semi-final to Real Madrid Castilla 3- 2 over the two matches overall.
This season has not been as successful, as Marquez’s side have won only four of their nine matches and sit in eighth place, despite significant squad turnover.
During an interview with ESPN in Mexico, after his viral crash, Pique explained that he thought Marquez was sufficiently prepared.
” Yes it’s sure. Rafa is more than ready for a lot of things (like coaching FC Barcelona) with his attitude, knowledge of the game and experience.
“He is learning as a coach and I am sure that in the future we will see him on the bench in La Liga. We will see if it is with Barça or with another team, but he is preparing excellently. »
Marquez and Piqué were teammates for two seasons at Barcelona, where the latter ended up replacing the Mexican in Pep Guardiola’s historic team. Marquez previously served as sporting director at Atlas, then youth coach at Real Alcala, near Madrid, before returning to the Blaugrana.
