La Liga was full of thrilling moments on the pitch this weekend, but once again it was shocked by further racial abuse towards Vinicius Junior.
Sevilla FC responded quickly by sending off one person for racial abuse and released a statement shortly after the match, but the following morning Vinicius also revealed that he had seen evidence of other racial abuse. The video of a child making a monkey gesture towards the Brazilian sent chills down my spine.
The Merengue player also posted a tweet declaring that he was ready to contribute to legal action and stricter laws on the matter to combat racism.
He added : ” Congratulations to Sevilla FC for their quick positioning and punishment in another sad episode for Spanish football.”
“Unfortunately, I had access to a video of another racist act during this Saturday’s match, this time committed by a child. I’m really sorry there is no one to educate you. I invest, and I invest a lot, in education in Brazil to train citizens with attitudes different from these.
“The face of today’s racist is displayed on websites as on many other occasions. I hope the Spanish authorities will do their part and change the legislation once and for all. These people must also be punished criminally.”
“It would be a great first step in preparing for the 2030 World Cup. I am available to help.” Sorry to sound repetitive, but this is isolated episode number 19.”
Of the 19 incidents discussed, only 11 were reported by La Liga, with the unreported incidents appearing to have mostly occurred before 2023.
Following the incident, England and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham posted a message of support for Vinicius on Instagram. The two men appear to have built a strong relationship early in their collaboration at the club.
“Always with you my brother”, thus wrote the Englishman. Recently, Vinicius also revealed that he did everything to persuade the Englishman to join him in the Spanish capital.
