José Mourinho was sent off during AS Roma’s match against Monza after upsetting his opponents’ sidelines with “whining” gestures.

The 60-year-old tactician received a straight red card from referee Giovanni Ayroldi in stoppage time of the match against Monza. Mourinho was seen shouting at Monza’s coaching staff with a ‘crying baby’ gesture after Stephen El Shaarawy’s winning goal rocked the Stadio Olimpico and took Roma back to sixth place in the Serie A standings.

Mourinho pointed the finger at the Monza bench after being questioned about his red card, saying they tried to influence the referees’ decisions during the match.

At the microphone of Sky Italia, the Roma coach said: “Why was I expelled? I do not know. I made two gestures towards the opposing bench, but I did not use any offensive words. Last year we played a great match in Monza and after the match some good but still inexperienced people insulted us.

“Today, the only bench that put on a great show and put pressure on the referee was theirs. I’m not criticizing that, I’m criticizing the fact that bad words were said after the match. I simply told them: “Good team and good coach”. There’s no need for that.”
