A year ago today, Karim Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d’Or. A moment that the Al-Ittihad player has not forgotten.

It was October 17, 2022. That evening, there was no question of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. There is no question of Kylian MbappĂ© or Erling Haaland either. No. All eyes are on a player who shone for months with his Real Madrid team. A player who, a few months earlier, won his fifth Champions League, at the same time as his fourth Spanish championship title. Called by Zinedine Zidane to come and receive his trophy, Karim Benzema then becomes the first Frenchman since “Zizou” (1998) to be crowned Ballon d’Or. A year later, the man who went into exile this summer in Saudi Arabia remembers it with pleasure.

Through a few “stories” posted Tuesday on his account Instagram, Karim Benzema reminded his followers what happened just twelve months ago. Short videos in which we see Zinedine Zidane announcing the victory: “ And this reward is for you, Karim Benzema. » Obviously a very strong moment for the former Olympique Lyonnais, crowned for all of his work, mainly at Real Madrid.

Which successor?

A year after his triumph, Karim Benzema is not competing for his own succession. Having left for Al-Ittihad during the 2023 summer transfer window, he will perhaps still have an eye on what will happen on October 30, when the 2023 Ballon d’Or is awarded. Favorite, Lionel Messi could glean his eighth (and probably last) BO Unless Erling Haaland and his crazy season with Manchester City pass him by. As for Kylian MbappĂ©, he still has a tiny hope of winning. Official response and results in a few days.
