Two people lost their lives in Brussels on Monday, killed with an automatic weapon by a madman. It would be two Swedish supporters. The Belgium-Sweden match was interrupted.
Scene of honor this Monday in Brussels, not far from Place Sainctelette, where at least two people presented as supporters of the Swedish football team lost their lives. A man armed with an automatic rifle is said to have fired into the crowd shortly before kick-off of the Euro 2024 qualifier match between Belgium and Sweden, at the Roi-Baudoin stadium.
According to a police source, the maniac was not arrested but investigators are already favoring the terrorist trail. Alerted to the situation, the players and members of the Swedish selection requested that the match be stopped at half-time – a request validated by their Belgian counterparts. Spectators were, however, invited not to leave the grounds of the Brussels stadium, like the precautions that were taken on November 13, 2015 at the Stade de France, on the sidelines of the football match between the Blues and Germany while that attacks were being carried out in Paris and Saint-Denis.
The police force around the stadium is currently reinforced. The first images of the attack are circulating on the Web, showing a man wearing an orange jacket and a white helmet equipped with an assault rifle. The Belgian press reports an alleged suspect who on social networks would have made numerous references to the Islamic State. According to RTL, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin ordered the strengthening of controls at the Franco-Belgian border.
