Kylian Mbappé is not made for Manchester City and a possible transfer to the Etihad Stadium would end up creating “confusion”, believes Marcel Desailly.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar continues to see his future called into question after refusing to extend his contract at Parc des Princes, which is due to expire next summer. Mbappé is expected to leave in 2024.
Real Madrid are leading the race for his signature, but any problems there could leave the door open for other suitors, including heavyweights in England. City have the ambition and spending power to compete, but both player and club have been warned against such a move.
Former French international Marcel Desailly, who enjoyed World Cup glory in 1998, spoke to Gambling Zone of a possible transfer of the kid from Bondy to Manchester: “ I know (Gaël) Clichy said he would thrive at City, but it won’t be easy if he goes to City. It may seem strange, but I don’t think Mbappé is cut out to play for City. There is too much discipline. In France, they say that the way City play does not leave much room for individuality. With all their passing, they’re not really suitable for players who want to take defenders from behind.”
“They pass, they move. (Bernardo) Silva and (Jack) Grealish both have the ability to play number ten, but (Pep) Guardiola’s philosophy killed them. He wants them to stay in their own half, win the ball, show speed, play the ball, get the ball back and do one-twos. Mbappé doesn’t do that. He uses the ball to make the difference. The other players look at him in confusion because he’s not supposed to do that! There will be a drop in confidence if he doesn’t start well there either. He’s a great player, but not a Man City player.”
