While Mehdi Benatia was announced, the position of football director could go to Italian legend Paolo Maldini.
OM has been without a football director since the departure of Javier Ribalta at the end of the week. However, the club is working hard to find a replacement for the Spaniard. And it should be between two men.
Maldini and OM, the reunion?
Mehdi Benatia would be the big favorite to take on this responsibility. However, the Moroccan is penalized by some constraints. On an administrative level, his appointment would pose a problem to the extent that he also works as an agent. However, in French regulations, it is prohibited to combine these two functions.
The Olympian management is therefore obliged to consider an alternative option. And this would be played by Paolo Maldini. According to several consistent sources, Pablo Longoria greatly appreciates the Italian icon and his enormous experience in football. And that’s why he would be willing to bet on him.
Maldini previously served as director of football. It’s in his favorite club, AC Milan. He did a very good job there, notably playing a key role in winning the Scudetto in 2022. He was then unceremoniously thanked by his hierarchy for unknown reasons.
As a player, Maldini has had to cross paths with OM on numerous occasions. The most memorable was of course in the final of the 1993 Champions League which ended in an Olympian success with a decisive goal from Basile Boli.
