Involved in an illicit betting affair, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo left the Italian selection gathering.

Not qualified for the 2022 World Cup, still in difficulty in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, Italy is currently shaken by a case of illicit betting. While the police went to Coverciano this Thursday to visit them, Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo had to leave the Nazionale rally.

“Today at the end of the afternoon, the Turin public prosecutor’s office notified the investigation documents to the players Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, currently training with the national team at the Federal Training Center of Coverciano, indicates the Italian Federation in a press release. Whatever the nature of the acts, considering that in this situation the two players are not in the necessary conditions to face the commitments planned in the coming days, the Federation has decided, also to protect them, to allow them to return to their respective clubs. »

Tonali and Zaniolo will miss Italy’s next two matches, in Malta and England, in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Their names have come out as part of an investigation by Italian justice into bets made by certain players . Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli was the first player involved. It was a former agent, Fabrizio Corona, who gave the names of Tonali and Zaniolo. The latter is even accused of having bet on a match while he was on the bench during an Italian Cup match with AS Roma, his former club.
