The coach of the French team Didier Deschamps is “afraid of offending” Kylian Mbappé and does not care if he wins the Ballon d’Or, believes Christophe Dugarry.
Kylian Mbappé is in the running for the 2023 Ballon d’Or, the winner of which will be announced in Paris on October 30, 2023. Deschamps insisted the Paris Saint-Germain striker deserved the award, although Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland are the favorites after their respective excellent 2022-23 seasons. However, French World Cup winner Dugarry doesn’t expect Mbappe to take top spot and claimed Deschamps thought the same, but didn’t want to share his true feelings for fear of ‘offending’ his star player.
“ It makes me laugh. We have the impression that it’s the ball of fake ass. Journalists ask the question and we don’t know if they really mean it”he told RMC Sport. “We ask Deschamps the question but I’m sure he doesn’t care. He (Mbappé) is not scoring at the moment, he is not playing very well, but (Deschamps) is afraid of offending him so he is obliged to make a response. Don’t make any connections with me and don’t “fry” me with Deschamps. I’m talking about everyone who gives their opinion, friends of friends, those who have an interest. There is no honesty in all this. The Ballon d’Or, who cares, it doesn’t interest anyone.”
Dugarry also expressed his belief that both Haaland and Messi would be deserving Ballon d’Or winners ahead of Mbappé. Messi led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup and Haaland won the treble in his first season at Manchester City, while Mbappé could only win the Ligue 1 title with PSG, who failed to win in the Champions League once again.
