Here is the specter of the Super League again, potentially revived by Saudi Arabia.

The new Eldorado of football – in terms of resources – continues to gain ground on the football scene. Fully invested in the new formula of the Club World Cup desired by Fifa – a real league which from 2025 will bring together no less than 32 clubs – Saudi Arabia is also at the heart of a rumor which has been growing in recent weeks .

According to the indiscretions of a European club manager who wished to remain anonymous, the Middle Eastern kingdom would work for the advent of a new Super League project – an alternative to the UEFA Champions League which could of course include teams that do not belong to the old continent, not to say Saudi. With a lot of stars this summer, Saudi Arabia offered itself a new national championship but is now thinking bigger.

A credible alternative to the Super League

Not long ago, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, president of the European Club Association (ECA), denied the possible integration of Saudi clubs into the current European C1. “ I don’t think there will be any other clubs coming from outside Europe anytime soon. I don’t know what will happen in a few years but today I don’t believe that a club from outside will play here in Europe. »

A22, the promoter of the European Super League currently nipped in the bud by UEFA, assures that a deal with Riyadh is not on the agenda. Some nevertheless see it as a credible alternative if the Court of Justice of the European Union rules in favor of the European Football Confederation by the end of the year regarding the illegality of the initial Super League project. The rumor promises to run wilder until then.
