While he will lead the French team to the Paris Olympic Games next summer, Thierry Henry assures that he is not thinking about it yet and has not yet discussed the subject with Kylian Mbappé.
Appointed head of the Espoirs at the end of the summer to replace Sylvain Ripoll, Thierry Henry intends to do things in order. Before devoting himself to the Olympic Games which will take place next summer, the former striker is solely focused on the qualifiers for the 2025 European Espoirs Championship and in particular on the two matches in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday, then host Cyprus on Tuesday.
The second top scorer in the history of the Blues nonetheless sees the big picture for the Games. “My dream is gold, he said in an interview given to The Team. I told the president. Now how? That’s another debate. Go ask Brazilians what their dream is. The same. I don’t dream of finishing second. The big boss, Aimé Jacquet, sold his dream to everyone in 1998. Afterwards, you have to be able to make it come true. And to achieve it, it’s important to visualize it. So, you have to visualize the gold. »
To do this, Thierry Henry hopes to be able to rely on the best players. And in particular Kylian Mbappé, who wants to be one of the three players aged over 23 called to participate in the Games. But the former Gunner assures him: the subject has not yet arrived on the table. “I haven’t talked about all this with Kylian yet. Even if, like everyone else, I heard that he would like to do them,” he assured. And the Bleuets coach smiles when the journalist points out to him that he has the “same level of information” as everyone else. “Yes, not far,” he replied.
However, Thierry Henry intends, from March, to convince the clubs to release their players and thus avoid the fiasco of the Tokyo Games in 2021. “At the right time, I will be there. But I completely understand the enthusiasm in France today for the Olympics, there is no problem”he assured.
