Mason Greenwood scored his first goal since January 2022, with the player on loan from Manchester United opening his account at Getafe.

The 21-year-old striker took on a new challenge in the summer transfer market by joining Spain.

At this point, he had not played competitively for over 18 months. Greenwood was suspended by United after being arrested for attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

The charges were dropped in February 2023, allowing the England international to resume his professional career.

Getafe have agreed a deal with United – following a lengthy internal investigation at Old Trafford – and he will spend the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign on their shelves.

He made his debut for the La Liga club in September, making his first start against Athletic Club, 613 days after his last appearance in United’s starting XI.

Greenwood has now scored his first goal in Spanish football after finding the target against Celta Vigo.

There were 33 minutes of play when the ball arrived in the direction of the winger at the far post.

He had a lot to do in an increasingly tight angle, but the goal opened up in front of him – the Celta goalkeeper being surprised by a low cross that beat him at the near post – and he sent the ball deep nets six meters apart.
