Mauricio Pochettino has challenged Raheem Sterling to show Gareth Southgate that he was wrongly ignored by England manager Gareth Southgate.

Raheem Sterling scored his third Premier League goal of the season in Chelsea’s 4-1 victory over promoted Burnley on Saturday at Turf Moor.

Sterling’s goal for the Blues came just two days after he was ignored by Gareth Southgate in the England national team for upcoming international matches.

Mauricio Pochettino, the Chelsea manager, praised Sterling for his efforts on the pitch and also said that the winger knew he had to show the national team manager that he deserved a place in the Three team Lions.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Pochettino said: “He is an experienced player and he knows he has to perform and show the national team manager that he is wrong”.

It’s his job, right, to play well? He played well, he contributed to the goals. I am very happy for him and for the team. I think the team was good, the performance was fantastic and we went into the international break feeling different.

On Thursday, Southgate announced a 26-member England squad that will play an international friendly against Australia on October 13 before facing Italy in the Euro 24 qualifier on October 17. Besides Sterling, Southgate also chose to ignore West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse in favor of his trusty midfield duo, Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson.
