Newcastle survived a VAR check on a handball and an offside before Dan Burn’s header against Paris Saint-Germain was validated in the Champions League.
The Magpies, who took the lead through Miguel Almiron, looked to have gone 2-0 up against the French giants shortly before half-time when Burn’s header could not be kept away by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. After a few minutes of waiting, the officials cleared the goal, with the 31-year-old defender scoring his first Champions League goal for his hometown club.
There was a long control during the preparation for the goal. The VAR team first sought to find out if Jamaal Lascelles had made a hand in the area, but this was not accepted. Then a check to see if Bruno Guimaraes was offside, before Burn’s header, showed the Brazilian was in a legal position and Eddie Howe’s men went into the break with a two-goal lead.
Newcastle eventually added a third and fourth goal in a major clash against a star-packed PSG at St James’ Park. This is the first time the Magpies have participated in the Champions League in 20 years. The Toons drew 0-0 with AC Milan in Italy in their last outing and are therefore in a good position currently.
Newcastle’s next meeting in the Champions League will take place on October 25, at home, against Borussia Dortmund.
