Traveling to the pitch at St James’ Park, Luis Enrique’s PSG sank like never before in the Champions League (4-1).

PSG expected a difficult evening. He was served. As expected, the atmosphere at St James’ Park was lively for its big reunion with the Champions League. The Magpies supporters did not have long to wait before getting fired up since if Randal Kolo Muani caused a first thrill a few moments after kick-off, a big error from Marquinhos allowed Newcastle to open the score from the first minutes of the match.

The tone for the evening was set. The match quickly turned into an ordeal and Luis Enrique’s men were trailing 3-0 at the break. And if Lucas Hernandez saved the honor in the second half, the French champions finally lost 4-1 at St James’ Park to concede a historic setback.

This defeat is in fact the heaviest suffered by PSG in the group stage of the Champions League. The capital club has only done worse once: during the famous comeback, during the return match of the round of 16 in winter 2017 against FC Barcelona. After a 4-0 success at the Parc des Princes, PSG lost 6-1 at the Nou Camp.

This setback by three goals equals the slap received in 2004 at the Parc des Princes against Chelsea. A 3-0 defeat marked by a double from Didier Drogba.
